Fasting

Are You Fasting or Just Not Eating?

Rediscovering the Biblical Purpose, Power, and Practice of Fasting. Fasting is more than the absence of food. It calls believers back to prayer, surrender, consecration, self-examination, obedience, and a deeper pursuit of God.

The Question Beneath the Question

More Than an Empty Plate

Giving up food is not the same as giving yourself to God. Many believers fast and still feel spiritually distracted, or wonder whether they are fasting biblically at all. True fasting is not an attempt to manipulate God; it is a willing surrender to God. Biblical fasting must remain joined to prayer, Scripture, repentance, consecration, and obedience. When it is, fasting produces more than an empty stomach. It produces a more attentive heart.

“Hunger tells me I have stopped eating; surrender tells God I have started fasting.”

— Superintendent Dr. Gary L. Cordon, Sr.

Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?

Isaiah 58:6 (KJV)
